Engling Fury (Tourney Report)

Post by Sven »

Hallo,

hier noch der versprochene Turnierbericht (ist auf Englisch, falls ich das ganze noch in
der Newsgroup oder so poste). Viel Spass beim Lesen.

Engling Fury Tourney Report

On the 8th of January 11 Methuselahs gathered in Karlsruhe to play
in the very first tournament of Karlsruhe in 2005. Because of the
number of players we had to play one 5 player table and one 6
player table.

Round 1:
Lukas (Ravnos Weenie Intercept) ->
Steffen (Tzimisce Fiendish Tongue/Intercept) ->
Frank (Weenie Potence) ->
myself (Anarch Diversion) ->
Joscha (Warghoul)

Joscha got out a Warghoul quickly, but then was denied further ones
by Lukas. I didn't draw any Galaric's Legacies (GL) in my starting hand
and had to turn Anarch the hard way (which slows down my deck even
more). While doing so I ate some small bleeds from Frank (he also
dunked a famed vampire of mine). Steffen had some trouble getting
started and was put under pressure from Lukas' weenies. Joscha
proposed some table-win deal to Frank, who declined, telling Joscha
that it was too early to deal for the whole table. A few turns
later Joscha, who feared dying a miserable death due to not getting
out any more Warghouls, offered Lukas the table for some VPs.
Lukas accepted the deal. This triggered a deal between Steffen, Frank,
and me. The initial offer was 2VP/2VP/1VP (I was offered 1VP).
I wasn't too happy with that, so after some discussion we decided
to oust Joscha, I would "park" the 6 pool for the oust on an
uncontrolled vampire and we would reevaluate the situation. However,
on our way in doing this, Steffen got ousted and we ran into the
time-out, so:

Lukas 1.5, Steffen 0, Frank 0.5, me 0.5, Joscha 0.5

Round 2:
myself ->
Erol (Lasombra toolbox) ->
Frank ->
Joscha ->
Steffen ->
Olaf (Pot/For/Dom, Ignazio & Friends)

In this game I had a really bad start. No GL and both, my predator
Olaf and my prey Erol, popped out an Intercept location denying me
the "cardless Go Anarch" action. I tried to cycle into GLs, got a
Powerbase LA suddened, and when I risked going Anarch got Ian
Forestal entombed and diablerized... Ouch! When my situation finally
stabilized a little bit (as Olaf was preoccupied with his predator),
I had two vampires out and was low on pool. Luckily I was able to
ward off a Hostile Takeover by Olaf on one of my vampires with a
Sudden Reversal. Thanks to some rescuing and a generous Owain, I dealt
with my grandpredator Steffen that after ousting Olaf he would
support me in ousting Erol. Then we entered a critical situation.
Joscha direct intervented a Bonding that stealthed a bleed that Olaf
threw at me (saving me and thereby earning the eternal gratitude of
Owain, well, at least for the rest of the game). I was down to 1 pool,
Olaf (having two vampires with one blood each) down to 2 pool. Olaf
wanted to influence himself out (seeing no more chance). This
triggered a lengthy play-to-win discussion at the end of which Denis,
one of the judges (we used the multi-judge system), urged Olaf to
play on, arguing that having your prey at 1 pool is not that bad an
opportunity to make a VP. Well, Joscha ousted Steffen and Olaf and
after some hectic dealing and counterdealing we ran into the time-out.
Somewhere in between Frank was ousted by Erol (after contesting
Cameron for several rounds, I don't quite remember all the details).

Erol 1.5, Frank 0, Joscha 2.5 (GW), Steffen 0, Olaf 0, me 0.5

Round 3:
Alexander (Euro Brujah) ->
Lukas ->
myself ->
Steffen ->
Erol

This was the first game in which I had a GL in my opening hand and a
start that wasn't too bad. I torporized one the Ravnos with a Haven
Uncovered and after Lukas got under pressure from Alexander we had
some kind of truce (renewed on each turn). He wouldn't do nasty things
in my direction and I gave him blood with Owain and rescued one of
his vampires in return. So I was able to turn on the heat on Steffen,
lowering the blood on his vampires and his pool slowly but steadily.
Lukas offered me the table for getting 2VPs in return, which I
accepted. I ousted Steffen and failed to oust Erol before the time-out
because I overlooked my Anarch Railroad which I had just played. Doh!
(So no table win, but a total of 2.5 VPs was enough to make the
finals.) One of the highlights of this round was lowly Spleen with
a Chimerstry skill card and a Path of Paradox blocking and surviving
combat monsters like Beast and Theo Bell again and again... (thanks
to Apparitions, Mirror Images, and bad draws by Alexander).

Finals:
Christopher (yes, also Pot/For/Dom, Ignazio & Friends) ->
Joscha ->
Erol ->
myself ->
Lukas

In the finals my deck finally ran smoothly. I was able to turn Anarch
with GLs, put out a couple of locations, and Owain governed out
Joseph. Joscha had an even better start. He quickly got out two
Warghouls and smashed Erol's vampires. Erol was not able to draw
any Entombments in time. Lukas and Christopher kept a low profile.
After torporizing all of Erol's vampires, Joscha bled him with his
own vampires. When it was clear that Erol would go down in 2-3 turns
and I eyed Joscha suspicously, he offered me a three turn truce
after ousting Erol. After looking at the 21 pool my prey had at the
time, I told him that I didn't like this offer (because I expected
to need more turns to go through my prey). After Owain stopped
sending his Care packages to Joscha and Kyoko started stealing blood
off of his vampires, he offered me to help oust my pred after ousting
Erol in return for Owain's blood and rescuing his vampires
(Christopher started putting pressure on him). After we both get our
VP we would then fight for the table. Erol went down and a couple
of turns later my prey was ousted (the final bleed was a pre-announced
bleed by Joscha that I deflected). Now Joscha and I were tempting
Christopher with VPs for the table win. Joscha's offer of 2VPs sounded
better, so Christopher agreed to help him. At that point in time,
however, my deck was running perfectly and Christopher was very low on
pool. I was raking in 4 blood per turn on my vampires thanks to
Owain, my hunting ground, and a stolen Rack. I blocked Joscha's
attempt to employ a retainer (for his next Warghoul) and sent the
employing vampire into torpor. Kyoko stole the last blood off of
Christopher's Jan Pieterzoon. Owain went in with a bleed at stealth
(Anarch Railroad) enhanced with a Conditioning. Jan could neither
block nor deflect and, as all other vampires of Christopher were
tapped, he was ousted. After playing some more Intercept locations
(to make sure no more Warghouls would be recruited), the game was
bagged, so to speak. I would be able to handle the remaining
Warghoul with a hand full of Diversions. The time ran out before
I ousted Joscha, but I already had enough VPs for the tournament
win.

If I forgot any important details, I am sure some of the other players
will help me fill in those. As I usually prefer to play with strange
(suboptimal?) decks rather than with staple tournament decks, getting
my first tournament win with an Anarch deck is so much sweeter. Well,
of course I was also quite luck^D^D^D^D^D^D^D^D^D predicted the
metagame well.

Danke fuer Deine Anmerkungen.
Wann hat wer was gemacht?" usw.)
